An X-Logue about how research and development processes are due for an upgrade, which focuses on sustainable processes that are cheaper and can be brought to scale. There is discussion around scientific discoveries that can be informed by other activities or industries, such as surfing or the art world.

Hi, everybody. So, I'm really happy to be here today. So I remember when I discussed with Zina about some potential topics for this talk, she told me we need something cool and fun. And so I directly thought about my vacation because it's always cool and fun. And I also realize that my vacation brings me a lot of inspiration. So let's talk about my vacation. So surfing is one of my favorite activities during my vacation but I'm not like Bryce from Nice. He’s an amazing surfer who has never surfed anywhere. Anyway, so last time I surfed. When I was on my broad, I thought about the surfer attitude. The Surfer most of the time compensates for his position to stay on his board, he must all the time adapt to the movement of the waves and the ocean to stay in balance. He reads and listens to the ocean movement, and finally, he is connected to the ocean. And when I was on my board, I thought it could be also a key approach, for innovating sustainably. To preserve nature, we must first  listen to it, we must follow the movement of nature and we must adapt to the movement to it to connect and stay connected to nature. So that's the first principle of the global sustainable innovation approach, according to me: be connected to nature with reasonable intelligence. Nature is an incredible organization. Indeed, nature has met almost every conceivable challenge over the past few million years. Nature is an incredible organization, nature works cooperatively respecting boundaries to meet the needs of each member of its ecosystem. So, this is a sustainable system. And finally, to innovate, we should imitate the proven design principle that nature uses. One of the most famous things Gaudi said, so the architect of the future will be by imitating nature, because this is the most rational, economical and sustainable world. So, Antoni Gaudi understood this critical key point to be connected to nature and imitate it because this is the most intelligent way to to build a sustainable world. So you understood during my vacation, I like to be close to the ocean. I'm an ocean lover, and I like surfing and kite surfing on the ocean. And the last time I kite-surfed in this lagoon, which is one of my favorite secrets spots, I also enjoy snorkeling to watch all the ocean life with some wonderful corals and a lot of culotte fishes. And at the same time, I could observe. this ecosystem and all the elements are in balance in this ecosystem. So all the elements live in cooperation, and in balance between themselves. So this ecosystem is sustainable. And at the same time, I swam and an idea crossed my mind. When we design a new project, we could consider a global ecosystem, like the ocean system, to build a sustainable system. It could be a global ecosystem, in balance with raw materials, with partners, suppliers, with production lines, etc. So this is the second principle of the global sustainable innovation approach, according to me, ecosystem.

When we design a new project, we have to think from the beginning to the end about the global impact. We have to consider a global ecosystem with available and limited resources of only one planet. Also used resources must be renewable, which means that stock of the resource can be replenished quickly, at least as fast it is consumed. So that's a key to think about a long term and sustainable solution. Moreover, we must be smart and use several sustainable design methods, including biomimicry, to have a better chance to get the result in a sustainable manner. So at last, the organization of the company could be also considered as a sustainable ecosystem. Which workplaces, buildings, transportation, energy, etc. The ultimate goal is to get an ecosystem in balance with the other ecosystem with which it interacts with a positive impact. We take all the elements in account with globality. And finally. Last time I was on vacation,  I remember I was on the rooftop, in front of the aquifer, sipping an amazing cocktail with some tapas. I like cocktails and tapas. And so I thought about why cocktails and tapas are so enjoyable. So I thought, okay, a cocktail is a beverage like a combination of pressures, elements, and compounds. It's the same for tapas. It's a mix of food to make a wonderful dinner. And I realized I had to sort key of my approach: the combination of elements, who ate some amazing solution and results. So that's the last principle of the global sustainable innovation approach, according to me, so the puzzle approach. The solution is in the combination of solutions. This is a globality and sustainable solution that will enable us to find a balance more respectful of nature, and especially of natural capital. This is the power of diversification based on the long term. Also, the interaction between ecosystems, like defined with the second principle will allow a puzzle approach by working together and making combinations. For instance, it could achieve zero waste, especially thanks to the imitation of nature. Nature uses a business model that knows no waste, no unemployment, no pollution, it does not use any core business or economy of scales. So it respects limits. And it works through cooperation to meet the needs of each member of its ecosystem. So it makes a combination and all spaces work together. Since our differences are a key strength in meeting the challenges they face. Of course, with this last principle, open innovation and cooperation will play a key role, especially to create some new innovative, sustainable business model. So that's the three keys I wanted to share with you today. So the three principles of the global sustainable innovation approach. Each principle is declined by several values and methods. So to translate this approach into a pragmatic roadmap, so if you are more interested in this approach, a book will come soon, nominally next year.
